Digital Dignity Institute

Who We Are

Independent. Interdisciplinary. Committed to Human Dignity.

Based in San Francisco and engaged around the world, the Digital Dignity Institute is an independent research and policy organization operating free of government and commercial interests. We exist to answer one question: as AI systems begin to act, decide, and remember on our behalf, how do we keep them answerable to the people they affect? We pursue that question through four kinds of work. We convene leaders across sectors to think through the hardest problems of the agentic age. We produce original research grounded in law, philosophy, and lived experience. We advise governments, institutions, and companies on policy. And we work alongside leadership teams on the structures, governance, and decision rights they need to adopt AI without surrendering accountability. Our approach is interdisciplinary because the problem is. No single field can tell us what dignity requires when a machine speaks for a person, or acts after them. So we bring together technologists, ethicists, lawyers, policymakers, and practitioners to build the frameworks this moment demands, and we test them where the consequences are real. We hold to a simple principle: technology is answerable to humans, never the other way around.

Executive Leadership

Leadership with ambition and heart

Emily Bauman, Founder and Chair of the Digital Dignity Institute

Founder & Chair

Emily D. Bauman

"The question of what it means to be human — and to be treated with dignity — has never been more urgent. We exist to ensure that  urgency is met with rigour, compassion, and accountability through  practical strategy, tools, convenings and publications."

Emily Bauman founded the Digital Dignity Institute on the conviction that the rapid advance of artificial intelligence demands new ethical and interdisciplinary frameworks — ones that are congruent with technological innovation while placing human dignity, agency, and rights at the centre of technological governance.

Under her leadership, DDI has convened scholars, policymakers, and practitioners from six continents to develop binding frameworks for AI replicas, posthumous data rights, and autonomous agent accountability. As a former Canadian diplomat and United Nations Communications lead, Emily brings two decades of experience in ethics, policy, founding companies and institutional design to this work. She holds an Honours Bachelors of Philosophy with High Distinction from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Masters of Arts in International Diplomacy (Human Security & Development) from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University in Canada.
